Doctoral candidate (gn) - WG Reef Systems

Source: ZMT official vacancies RSS feed. The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) GmbH (www.leibniz-zmt.de) is an independent research and teaching institute that provides scientific knowledge for the protection and sustainable use of tropical coastal ecosystems. To this end, we work in an inter- and transdisciplinary manner with our partners in the tropics. The ZMT is a member of the Leibniz Association. With Earth warming at an unprecedented pace, major ecosystems are expected to change profoundly by the end of this century. Located at the warmest and most biodiverse region of the planet, tropical ecosystems face a variety of pressures. Mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and coral reefs, which are caught at the intersection between climate change and human coastal development, are particularly vulnerable. In three tropical oceans of the world – the Atlantic, the Indian, and the Pacific Ocean – the Horizon Europe project SEASTRONG aims to investigate the multidirectional pathways connecting mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and coral reefs to understand how ecosystem functioning and service provision can be sustained at seascape scales under different climate-change scenarios. We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join SEASTRONG, focusing on ecological connectivity across mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and coral reefs in Belize. The PhD will investigate how coastal habitat mosaics support reef fish communities and sustain key ecosystem functions, including trophic connectivity, nutrient cycling, and biomass production. The work will combine underwater field surveys, biological and environmental sampling, stable isotope analyses and quantitative modelling. The candidate will contribute to fish and habitat surveys across mangrove–seagrass–reef corridors, fish sampling, and the integration of multiple datasets to quantify functional links among habitats. The candidate will be based at ZMT in Bremen, Germany, within an international research environment dedicated to coral reef ecology and quantitative marine science. The project will include extended fieldwork in Belize, where a local collaboration framework will be established with Belizean partners. The PhD will benefit from the European SEASTRONG network, including partners working on tropical seascape connectivity, ecological functions, biogeochemistry and marine conservation. The working group Reef Systems is seeking to fill an opening for a doctoral candidate (subject to release of funds). Doctoral candidate (gn) (Reference: 28-SeaStrong-PhD2) Your tasks: Collection (in Belize) to identify connectivity pathways between mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. Collaboration with researchers from the SEASTRONG consortium to optimise protocols for field data collection. Developing code to manage and analyse data collected in the field in a fully reproducible format, and conducting analyses of the data collected during field campaigns. Oversee the preparation and submission of scientific manuscripts based on data collected and analysed in the field, and contribute to manuscripts by other researchers within the SEASTRONG consortium as needed. Presentation of the work carried out as part of SEASTRONG in the form of scientific presentations at internal SEASTRONG workshops and at scientific conferences. Requirements: Applicants must hold a Master degree in Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, or a related discipline and are thus expected to have a strong background in marine ecology, functional ecology,

Doctoral candidate (gn) - WG Systems Ecology

Source: ZMT official vacancies RSS feed. The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) GmbH (www.leibniz-zmt.de) is an independent research and teaching institute that provides scientific knowledge for the protection and sustainable use of tropical coastal ecosystems. To this end, we work in an inter- and transdisciplinary manner with our partners in the tropics. The ZMT is a member of the Leibniz Association. Climate change is a well-established scientific fact, multiple lines of evidence prove that it is caused by human activities. While consensus among scientists on the role of humans as drivers of climate change is overwhelming, the public opinion remains fractured along political, generational and ideological lines. Different factors concur to maintain these fractures, including cognitive biases and the way information is produced, distributed, and accessed. In societies affected by various forms of inequalities (economical, educational, etc.), access to reliable, verified information is not distributed evenly, creating and maintaining opinions that may not conform with scientific facts. The lack of consensus in this context paralyses legislative action, fuels public polarisation, and creates legal uncertainties that prevent effective climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. By building on our previous work on opinion dynamics, we plan to develop Agent-Based Models of social influence rooted on network theory to investigate the dynamics of opinions in societies affected by cognitive biases and subject to different information structures. We are particularly interested to study three factors determining how information shapes opinion dynamics: (1) the structure of information, especially in relation to the divide between wealthy groups (which can afford premium subscriptions to high-quality factual information) and disadvantaged groups (which rely often on algorithmically driven, low-quality sources); (2) the role of inequality in voices dictating who gets a voice and who is ignored; and (3) media with agendas, involving both the broadcasting of certain stories repeatedly, while starving others of attention, and how certain stories are framed. Using computational modelling, we intend to understand how various characteristics of information may impact opinion dynamics and the formation of consensus or divides on existential matters like climate change. This research will be undertaken in close collaboration with Professor Paul E. Smaldino (from University of California Merced and Santa Fe Institute). The working group Systems Ecology is seeking to fill an opening for a doctoral candidate (subject to release of funds). Doctoral candidate (gn) (Reference: 27-SE-PhD) Your tasks: - Investigate how cognitive biases influence opinion dynamics - Investigate how information and media influence opinion dynamics - Develop computational models of opinion dynamics - Apply network theory to models of opinion dynamics - Produce results publishable in peer-reviewed journals - Produce and defend a PhD thesis Requirements: Applicants must hold a Master degree in one of the following disciplines: mathematics, physics, computational sciences, social modelling, or in similar quantitative or numerical disciplines. Knowledge or a keen interest in behavioral economics, psychology, sociology, and data science will represent an advantage. PhD position: Maintaining Proteostasis in Aging (m/f/d)

Source: DAAD official PhDGermany RSS feed. Thinking of doing your PhD in the Life Sciences? The International PhD Programme (IPP) Mainz is offering talented scientists the chance to work on cutting edge research projects. As an IPP PhD student, you will join a community of exceptional scientists working on diverse topics ranging from how organisms age or how our DNA is repaired, to how epigenetics regulates cellular identity or neural memory.Activities and responsibilitiesThe research group of Anton Khmelinskii in collaboration with Jan Padeken offers the following PhD project:The progressive deterioration of protein homeostasis (proteostasis) is a primary hallmark of aging. As organisms age, the functionality of the proteostasis network, comprised of molecular chaperones, the ubiquitin-proteasome system and autophagy, declines, leading to the accumulation of misfolded and aggregated proteins that compromise cellular viability. Proteostatic decline is not merely a consequence of aging but an early, causal event whereby loss of proteostasis precedes and predicts organismal decline, and its onset is sufficient to accelerate aging. Conversely, genetic or pharmacological enhancement of proteostasis network capacity can extend lifespan and suppresses age-related disease associated with protein misfolding across multiple model systems. These observations raise fundamental questions: what endogenous small molecules sustain proteostasis during aging, can their supplementation prevent neurodegenerative (and other protein folding diseases) and slow the aging process?PhD project: Therapeutic applications of small molecule modulators of proteostasisOrganisms across all domains of life employ the accumulation of small organic osmolytes, which include molecules such as betaine and taurine, to mitigate proteotoxic stress. Recent work has also demonstrated anti-aging properties of this molecules, through yet unclear mechanisms. This project aims at dissecting the mode of action of different osmolytes using human cellular model systems and C. elegans as a model of organismal aging. We would like to address the following questions:1. How do osmolytes affect cellular and organismal physiology?2. Which types of stresses can be mitigated with exogenous osmolytes?3. What types of protein misfolding pathologies (e.g., neurodegenerative diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), Alzheimers's, Parkinson's, Huntington's) can be ameliorated with exogenous osmolytes? The project is part of an ongoing collaboration between the Khmelinskii and Padeken groups, which gives you the opportunity to become an expert in a wide range of methods and experimental approaches. This includes transcriptomics, proteomics, cell and molecular biology, fluorescence microscopy and advanced high-throughput mutagenesis screening. If you are interested in this project, please select Khmelinskii/Padeken as your group preference in the IPP application platform.Qualification profileAre you an ambitious scientist looking to push the boundaries of research while interacting with colleagues from multiple disciplines and cultures? The project combines:Self-thermophoretic Janus microswimmers driven by dynamic laser landscapes (Cichos group, Leipzig)Light-powered bristle robots on a programmable LED arena (Roichman group, Tel Aviv University)A shared theoretical framework built on fundamental thermodynamic limitsComparing microswimmers with robots will reveal which limits of control are universal, from single particles to swarms, with applications from microswimmer transport to energy-efficient swarm robotics. What You Will DoDesign and run experiments with light-driven Janus microswimmers, shaping activity landscapes in real time with a spatial light modulatorFabricate microfluidic chips and measure the energy that drives the particlesTrack hundreds of interacting particles with machine-learning methods and test fundamental thermodynamic bounds on controlWork closely with the Tel Aviv team through monthly joint meetingsPresent findings at international conferences and co-author publications in high-impact journalsQualificationsMaster's degree in Physics or Physical Chemistry with excellent academic standingSolid background in soft matter, statistical or non-equilibrium physics, and a keen interest in connecting experiment with theoryHands-on experience in optics, video microscopy, particle tracking and/or microfluidicsProgramming experience for data analysis and experiment automation (Python preferred; machine-learning experience is a plus)Excellent English and enjoyment of interdisciplinary teamworkWhat We OfferState-of-the-art laser and microscopy setups for real-time, light-driven control of active particlesResearch stays in the Roichman lab in Tel Aviv and a binational team working on shared protocols and joint publicationsThe chance to help shape a new research direction at the interface of active matter, stochastic thermodynamics and controlSupport for international conference travelProfessional development opportunities including teaching experience and transferable skills trainingVibrant research community in a culturally rich and affordable European cityApplication ProcessPlease submit the following documents and information to cichos@physik.uni-leipzig.de by 22 October 2026:Cover letter (max. 1 page) outlining your interest in the project, relevant skills and career goalsNames and contact information of at least two academic referencesCV/resume including any publications or conference presentationsAcademic transcripts (bachelor’s and master’s degrees)About Leipzig UniversityFounded in 1409, Leipzig University is one of Germany's leading research institutions with a strong international focus. For more information about our research: https://www.uni-leipzig.de/~mona Partner group in Tel Aviv: https://www.roichmanlab.sites.tau.ac.il/ We are committed to increasing diversity in STEM and strongly encourage applications from qualified candidates of all backgrounds.
